So I finally had a chance to try this place. I've read all the great reviews about it, so naturally, I was excited. When we got there, we were hit by the awesome smell of smokiness, which got me even more excited. I'm sure, by then, my pupils were dilated and the salivation glands started working. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the trip. While the food was ok, I didn't think it was as good as the reviews had led me to believe. The cornbread and collard greens were pretty solid. Mac n cheese had a funky freezer burn/ Velveeta taste to it, ribs were a little dry and cold (disappointed I only got 2 ribs), chicken was decent, and the pork was ok. I was disappointed, because the smell led me to believe there was going to be a solid taste of smoke in the meat, but there wasn't much there. It did have a decent taste, but it def needed the sauces on the side. I did like their Mustard sauce a lot, had a good mustardy bite to it, the other sauces were, eh. I don't know, maybe I am just spoiled by Music Man's in Moncks Corner. BBQ Joint is def better than Momma Browns and the guys working were nice enough. I'd give them a solid 2.5.

The Barbeque Joint is an interesting and innovating barbeque restaurant with above average food. There corn bread is literally the best thing on their menu. I usually order their platter combo which consists of your choice of shredded chicken, shredded pork, or a mixture of both. Also it comes with two side items and corn bread. I cannot attest to all their sides but I love their hash rice, collards and coleslaw. This restaurant has a few picnic tables located inside their restaurant. This gives it a picnic feeling while providing the restaurant with a unique style. There are not very spacious and the seating can be limited so make sure you come early to this restaurant. Their lines can be long during their lunch hours. I seem to hype on service because let's face it who wants to go to a restaurant with poor service. This restaurant has great service and has yet to disappointment me. My biggest problems with this restaurant are their hours of operation and there number of seats. (Only reasons I did not put them at 5 stars) I will always remember the Barbeque Joint. It is clearly one of the better barbeque places in Charleston.

Ate lunch here today. Got the combo bbq and chicken with mac n cheese and potato salad. The chicken was very dry, the bbq had no smoke flavor and the side weren't very appealing. Ill go to madra rua, evo or johnny's before I go back.

Great place, great staff, AWESOME sides, very fair price for a nice size portion and a really good price on bbq by the pound and good sauce, big role of paper towels on the table which is key for a bbq place, to be honest nt the absolute best bbq I have ever had but in the top 10 but some of the best sides ever and with all other factors being fantastic I have to give 5 stars!!!

Great chuck town bbq! No joke, I have never eaten hash except here. I could eat just their hash for a meal. This is a place where I take out of towners for a local feeling place, and local tasting bbq.

Yum. Driver from our hotel gave us a tour of Park Circle restaurants and hit the nail on the head recommending this one.Flavorful pulled chicken and pork, $20 for 2 of us, great potato salad, green beans, collards and could OD on the corn bread. Down home feel. Go.

I have been here a couple times and can not say this is the best BBQ in Charleston. The pulled pork and brisket have been dry the last couple times I stopped in. The sides are good and service is pretty quick. The best entree so far I had here was the fried chicken!

  • Amarys M.

Ick. In the land of great Southern food that is Charleston, this restaurant does not even make it into the rankings. My co-worker and I ate here for lunch and we both agreed that both of our meals were a bland disappointment. That peanut butter and jelly sandwich I packed for lunch that day would have been more satisfying.

In and out in less than 15 minutes with some of the best food around! You can't beat this place!

BBQ sandwich was good. Large portions. Definitely get the corn bread. Combo drink is only their homage iced tea. $2.25 for a bottle of soda.

Best BBQ in Charleston hands down! This is definitely where you need to head for tasty BBQ, Ribs and all the variations of barbequed meats with a southern flavor and down-home family recipes. Their mac'n'cheese is also out of this world. I always get filled up and definitely always leave happy. The staff is always super friendly as well and I have been there at least a dozen times. I cannot recommend this place enough, definitely check it out!!

I'll keep this short as many of the reviews covered what I experienced. The pulled pork wasn't bad. I could only find one of the sauces (mustard based I think) and it was alright. The mac and cheese was awful. I've never met a mac and cheese I couldn't eat. I couldn't eat this one. Just exactly as someone else described, it was overcooked mush. Of the three of us, none of us liked the mac and cheese so it definitely was the product and not the consumer. SUPER nice people running the place so maybe that's why I hate to give a poor review? Value wise, a bit pricey, but even if it was a steal, I wouldn't return. Sorry!

Great bbq for a great price. The bacon and bean cake is a nice dessert but not worth the extra price. Stick with the house platter, one meat, two sides. The tomato pie is basically cheese pie with salsa, and mac-n-cheese is mac-n-cheese. Nice plate someone suggested once was a house salad with bbq pork dumped on top. Health but yet not, so good.

On December 8, 2014 Sam R. and I, Dante G. responded to The Barbecue Joint located at 1083 East Montague Avenue, which is in the City of North Charleston in reference to lunch. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a male at the counter who very quickly obtained and fulfilled our orders. I went with the simple and quick pulled pork sandwich with one side. I went with my old faithful choice, Mac and cheese. Sam G. chose similarly, however, went with the slaw. We both drink Arnold Palmers. We sat along the interior of the D wall. This gave me a clear view of the dining room as well as the single with entry in the center of the A wall of the building. Sam G. sat opposite and had an acceptable view of the counter, service area, and kitchen. All of which we're very clean. My sandwich was on a regular role. The pork was tender and juicy. I complimented it with the mustard based sauce. The mac and cheese was very cheesy. Just as we were finishing our meal, we were joined by a random citizen. That is the type of place it is. People, when did they know each other or not, come together for meeting barbecue and sometimes great conversation. Unfortunately, I believe this man had taken a vow of silence. End of Report.

Good BBQ. Really simple dining experience. They don't have much seating space but they make it work. I had the brisket when I was their. The selection of sauces is good. I typically go to EVOs but I wanted some BBQ this time. Very friendly and fast service. I love my BBQ and this was in between good and great. I wish I could have given it 4.5 but i can't. But I will totally eat there again and I suggest you try it out!

Fast, friendly service but much better bbq available in the area. The special was sausage and it was great but everything else wasn't very good and seemed like it had been sitting awhile.

  • Steve M.

The BBQ Joint is decent barbecue but a limited menu -at least on Sunday's. Basically pulled pork or pulled chicken. You get a choice of a platter or sandwich. The sides are good. I enjoyed the greens but didn't think the Mac and cheese was that great. I did think the homemade pickles were quite good. The outdoor tables are dog friendly too. I wish we got there earlier to try the chicken and waffles special.

Before I write my review on The Barbeque Joint, I want to preface it with a caveat: The problem with Yelp is you are mixing social media with food reviews. Too many here want to be seen as a 'liker', not a 'hater'. It unfortunately makes for less than objective reviews, by so many on Yelp. There are way too many 4s and 5s awarded to mediocre restaurants who think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, not. A restaurant can't fix problems when it doesn't know something is wrong. The Review The Barbeque Joint looks inviting from the outside, but once in the doors it's drab dingy, and no life to the joint. I know, I know, some BBQ places go out of their way to achieve that "ready to be condemned" look. This was more like the operation is tired, lethargic, and burned out. I don't know about you, but at 7 o'clock on Thursday night in Old North Charleston, you'd expect a place to be hopping, full of happy, noisy people, having a good time, but it wasn't. When the two of us started to place our order at the counter, I knew something was off, when the cashier stopped to prepare the plate for the first order, before taking mine and letting me pay. Hey, wait a second. Isn't the person handling dirty money from the public, supposed to either wash their hands before handling food or having somebody else fix the plates in the kitchen? (there was a teenager or young adult sitting on a stool in the kitchen playing with his smart phone, not doing anything.) So let's get to the food. Here is your WARNING (pick another place). The hot food was colder than the cold food. When a place is in trouble, one of the first things to happen, is the steamtable is turned way down or off, to save electricity, at the expense of the customers health. The cold food such as potato salad and slaw should be kept refrigerated or on a chill table. Read 'food safety 101' or 'Health code violation'. While the sauce on the table was indeed pretty tasty, the barbecue meat on our orders obviously had been sitting around awhile. Good smoke flavor, but lost with the other issues. The coleslaw and potato salad both tasted like they came from an institutional food service. I hate it when places do this as both items are easy to make from scratch, and actually cost less to make on-site. Not sure exactly what strain of bacteria we were introduced to, but the following day we were both listless and tired, had no energy, and felt somewhat dizzy at times. We had not eaten elsewhere out in public the day of our visit, or the next. This disappeared within 24 hours, but the next day it went through both digestive tracks in rapid fashion. I feel sad having to write a review like this, as the place has such great potential. But it is,what it is. If you are the owner reading this, and just don't care anymore, hang up your apron and quit. If you do care, this act badly needs to be cleaned up.

We've been here several times and each has been a great experience. You order your food at the counter and are dipped up right away. I thought the collards were the best I've ever had and the sausage in them did not hurt! Once you are done getting your food on the tray head over and grab your tea, sauce, and pickles and grab a seat. Overall some rock solid BBQ. I do prefer a bit more smoke in my food and a good brew which they don't have.

Excellent BBQ. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of mac&cheese and an Arnold Palmer. All for 11 bucks! And note the spicy bbq sauce has some kick!

Very small menu but fast and tasty. Basically chicken and pulled pork. If you are in a hurry and not felling very picky about selection, this is a good choice.

I've been to a variety of bbq places in the Charleston area and this one is my favorite so far. It's a very casual "plate lunch" style restaurant, to borrow a term from Hawaii, where the food is the star. You won't get fancy place settings, a waiter, and to be honest the decor isn't my style. What you will get is a trip into the historic old town of North Charleston, which is very neglected at times, and some great flavors. I've had pulled chicken, pulled pork, and brisket and each one was well worth ordering a second time. The portions are enough to make you feel full but not bursting, a tea or lemonade is included, and the plastic cutlery is high quality (heh). I've also gone back and forth between the red and yellow bbq sauces and both are delicious. For me, the clincher is the sides. This is where the fifth star is earned. The baked beans are the best I've ever had and the hash and rice is possibly the best food item I've had since moving to Charleston. Top it off with a glass-bottle Coke if you want. This place is excellent, and the east side of North Charleston is on the rise due to amazing establishments like this one.

Some of the best BBQ in the area. Everyday of the week you get a choice of BBQ or the special menu item. Great food and service.

Man, I can't put my finger on it...it just seems like things are changing here, and not for the better. I'm a huge fan of this place and what they have going, but I can't come for the pulled pork anymore. The fried chicken and fish are still great, but the pulled meats are so dry you have to douse them in vinegar sauce before you can eat it. Down one star...here's to hoping it gets better! I like the Joint. Great local place, great atmosphere, and great food. I'm not sure that this place makes my favorite BBQ in the area, but it's top notch. You can't go wrong with the pulled pork sammy with a side of Mac-n-cheese or collards. The service here is friendly and helpful every time, and you gotta love the quick and simple setup of the place. Go on Monday for fried chicken or Friday for the catfish!!! Plus the letter magnets on the tin wall make for an interesting game while wolfing down that smoked pig!!

Mmmmm best BBQ and fried okra! I'm hoping one day I can score the fried catfish special!!

Come for the pulled pork and chicken, come back for the daily specials. The Joint is an institution in Park Circle and I frequent it more than I care to admit. My favorite dish is the friend chicken on Monday with a side of potato salad. Southern food done right. You won't find better sides in town and the meat is cooked to perfection. Great meal for the money and super friendly staff.

I have been here twice...the place is A-OK. The vibe here is a little like...if this were in the Epcot Center it would be the representation of Carolina BBQ (sans the minced version that I find in Eastern Carolina), which is not a good or bad thing. Atmosphere - Picnic themed, noisy, communal seating (ala picnic bench) hipster wannabe. Service - Friendly, fast, it felt like you were dealing with the owners. Food - In my visits I have had their catfish (see pic), pulled chicken, pulled pork, collard greens, fried okra, barbeque hash (SC style), and cornbread. Favs: Fried okra, barbeque hash (SC style), and cornbread. The okra, while there was no spice in the breading, was decent. The hash here was delicious on its bed of fluffy white rice. I could easily have this dish as a meal instead of as a side...it is that good to me. The cornbread should be labeled 'crackbread' . It has a flavor of sweetcorn combined with what I believe to be maple syrup, which makes this some of the best cornbread I have ever had. OKs: The pulled chicken and pulled pork were underwhelming. There was not much of a smokey flavor in the meat. Even after adding sauce, the meat was just there. The greens were decent, but I have had better. I think they needed some/ more pork fat in them. Mehs: The Catfish was covered in a decent and light breading, but the fish was tough and gummy. I did not like it. Overall - While this is not a bad choice for BBQ, it is not the best either. If your in the area I would stop but I would not go out of my way to eat here.

No nonsense, straightforward menu. Been there several times and it's very consistent. Portions are generous including the sides and very reasonably priced. In my opinion the pulled pork is one of the best in Charleston. Collard greens are also about as good as it gets. I wish that they'd bring back the house made pickles though!

Mixed feelings on this place after 1 visit. Some stuff was awesome, some stuff very sub par. Going with a solid 3 stars for now but another visit is in order because I feel that they could definitely go up or down a full star. Pulled pork was excellent. No issues here. Very moist and tender with a really good flavor, especially the bark. They sell their rub and it might be worth picking up because that bark was delicious. The pulled chicken on the other hand...not so great. Very little flavor and extremely dry. Would have loved to try some ribs, but that's a Wednesday only thing apparently. Sauces...hmmm. Their mustard sauce is ok but nothing exciting. Their ketchup based sauce is flat out bad. Sorry guys, but it just wasn't even edible. They also had a watermelon and peach version of the ketchup based sauce. Those were actually pretty good. Much better than the plain one. I liked them a lot, but didnt even notice them until I was almost done eating because the only 2 bottles of them were over by the drinks. I'll definitely look for those first next time. Sides were about average. I really liked the collards with the sausage. The others I tried (cole slaw, mac n cheese, and potato salad) were good but very average. Sweet tea was excellent. Sliced lemons on hand, always a plus in my book. OH and they have PBR on tap. I like sweet tea with my Q but I love it when bbq places have a beer option because most don't and sometimes I just want a cold one with my meat. That's what she said? All in all not a bad place but not up to the standard of the other Park Circle restaurants that I'm big on. Will give them another shot for sure.

It's okay. There's not much to this place despite the large number of people here during lunch and that it's a bit hard to get seats (the outside seating is wonderful in the sun though). You stand in the long line, you order and they slap the food in your plate and you pay. They have a special everyday. The day I went was beef brisket, so I got that and two sides and a drink for about $12. I had collard greens as one of my sides, and red rice. I didnt really try their bbq sauce, but without it, the food is quite bland. There was no flavour to the brisket. The collard greens were alright, the rice wasn't all that flavourful. The portions are good, the texture is decent.

I'm slowly trying to visit the restaurants in the Park Circle area and finally had a chance to stop in at The Barbeque Joint for dinner. Over the last several months I'd heard some pretty good word of mouth from family so I was looking forward to the visit. The place was nice, clean, smelled wonderful and the guy at the counter couldn't have been nicer. After a quick rundown of the menu I decided on a Barbeque Plate with brisket, mac and cheese and red rice with a slice of corn bread. I quickly added a sample of all three sauces they serve to my brisket and sat down to tear into what was a generous, heaping plate of food. Unfortunately, that great smokey smell that greets you when you walk into the restaurant did not show up in the meat at all. If it wasn't for the sauces (a mustard based, a typical Memphis style and a North Carolina vinegar based) the brisket would have been pretty much tasteless. The best thing I can say about the brisket is that it was tender. The sides didn't fare much better with me. I love a great mac and cheese, especially a southern style mac and cheese casserole. What I was served looked promising but had been way overcooked. The macaroni had become mush so it was almost like eating cheese flavored paste. I thought the red rice was better but there was an odd metallic like after taste in my mouth when eating it. Not sure if it was from using canned tomatoes or tomato sauce or if it was from some type of spice used in the dish. Far and away the best thing I ate there was the cornbread. Oddly enough that is the one thing I'm usually never able to find done well when I eat out and this corn bread was perfect. While I didn't try any of my wife's dinner she said the pulled pork sandwich was "OK" and she agreed with my assessment of the mac and cheese, leaving 90% of her's on the plate, uneaten. I really wanted to like this place, wish I'd visited the same place that has received some of these great reviews but based on our first trip we didn't see that place. Maybe it was just an off night but we'll steer clear in favor of other barbecue restaurants in the area.

My sixth visit to this location...first time trying the brisket. Guess I'm spoiled from Texas, Oklahoma and St. Louis where brisket is cut to order, not sitting in a broth because it's overcooked or dried out. I actually thought I was being served roast beef versus brisket. The BBQ joint brisket on some Texas toast smothered in gravy would be a great open-face beef sandwich, but nothing close to brisket. Side orders, no complaint there...I like their thicker-than-standard baked beans, and the mac-n-cheese, different but enjoyable. Best side included with a platter is the cornbread, moist with good sweet flavor. Add some jalapenos and the cornbread would be GREAT. Service is fast as everything is already prepared sitting at front counter. Not horrible but over-priced for the quality of the BBQ. I'm trying to think of any meat I've liked here and can recall the fried chicken, which I believe is a weekday special only. This place is subpar on BBQ but average for what you can expect to find in the area. Still searching for a great BBQ joint in SC...if you're a fan of Midwest/TX style BBQ...keep searching and let YELP know when you find it.

Fantastic pulled pork sandwich, brisket, sides of mac n cheese, hash n rice, etc., all good. Simple, inexpensive, friendly place. They've been experimenting with different sauces lately, which has been hit or miss but I appreciate the creative effort.

I'm surprised by all the reviews saying this place is the best BBQ around! My husband and I were in the area for the farmer's market and decided to try this out for dinner. We left there saying we should have tried one of the other Park Circle restaurants instead. Atmosphere is cute, picnic style tables and very casual. There are a few outdoor tables also but it was a bit windy out so we stayed inside. This place is basically fast food BBQ. The food is all pre-made and sitting there and they just scoop it onto plates for you. We both had pulled pork sandwiches, hubs had a side salad, and I tried the day's veg-green beans and corn. Well, the pork had no flavor until you added sauce and it was quite dry without the sauce. My veggies came out with some sort of odd liquid that soaked the bun for my sandwich, so that got all soggy. My hubby's salad was basically romaine lettuce and a couple slices of tomato. I don't think we will be returning here with all the other BBQ choices available.

That's a 4 1/2 stars! this is some fantastic barbeque! the sausage based collards introduced an entire new school of thought when it comes to collards....my favorite in charleston. The pulled pork is lovely! Moist and flavorful, with great portions. Their sauces are ecclectic and GREAT, great twists on sauce. Overall this place is one of my favorites, it definately isn't your traditional barbeque flavors and styles. It puts a fresh view on barbeque and breaks free from a lot of tradition that is much needed in this town.

Simple concept, fantastic food and friendly staff. They're not shy about stacking your plate high and have every type of sauce you could imagine. We'll look to have our next party catered by these guys.

I visit this place at least every other week for lunch. Vegetables are consistently yummy and I like the pulled pork very much. Pulled chicken seems a little dry every time I tried it. Corn bread is spectacular, as is the Mac and Cheese. Sausage and ribs are always good. I am NOT however a fan of the fried catfish on Fridays. There is way to much breading. It is thick, hard and basically tasteless. We will keep going there because the prices are great, the food portions are huge and the sweet tea is excellent. Staff is friendly and you don't have to wait long for your food.

This place is great for lunch because it's tasty barbecue and they understand that sometimes people need to eat and run. The menu is basic but they get it right: - a "sandwich" gets you either bbq chicken, bbq pork, or half-and-half sandwich plus a drink (tea, sweet tea, lemonade) and a side (veggie of the day, mac & cheese, collards, slaw, etc). - a "platter" gets you the sandwich, drink, cornbread, and choice of two sides. You can also buy the meats by the pound if you'd like to have friends over for dinner! There is a rotating daily selection (this is the most recent incarnation): Monday: bacon ranch chicken Tuesday: sausage Wednesday: ribs Thursday: beef brisket Friday: hash The folks there are friendly and the music ranges from Johnny Cash to the Clash. We always leave happy and full. There's the red sauce, the gold sauce, and the vinegar. I never knew I liked vinegar on barbecue until I poured it all over a pork sandwich! They've also created a hot red sauce and hot vinegar, which are both tasty, but they keep those bottles up by the register because people keep stealing the sauces! They are basically open for lunch M-Sat and if you get there before 6 on weekdays, you can snag some dinner on your way home from work.

I had high hopes about this place but my experience was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I was given a $25 gift certificate on Christmas for this place. I went with a friend to have lunch. I asked to split it in two, using only $12.50 of the value and paying for the balance of our lunch in cash. Two lunches were only $18. I wanted to be able to come back a second time. Well, in steps this little retarded person behind the counter and he tells me I can't do that. I reminded him it was a certificate that basically said I had PREPAID for $25 worth of food, and how I chose to spend it shouldn't matter. He had had the money for 3 months without giving anything up. He became very pissy and said it was his place and he could do whatever he wanted to. I couldn't believe what an ass he was right in front of other customers. I told him to give me the certificate back and he snatched it from me and said NO very loud and told me if I didn't like it I could "get the fuck out". Then he resumed what he was doing which was wasting good oxygen. Basically he was planning on stealing my money!! I took the high road and ended up just taking the two plates and we ate there while the little troll just watched with a smirk on his face. I have had BBQ all over this state and I am somewhat of an affeciando on BBQ. This was NOT good bbq. Melvins, Dukes, Browns, Shealy's, Hometown..they all have much better food. This tasted like he scraped it from a dog's butt. The sauce gave me diarrhea. The hash over rice tasted like he just used the leftover bbq from last week and added ketchup to make it palatable. Needless to say he shouldn't be cooking bbq, he should return to his job at the DMV in Ohio. I am a GM at a large retail store in Charleston and if I treated ANY customer like this jackass did, we would be out of business in a week. Be very careful before going as the guy who owns the place just doesn't care. He probably doesn't even wash his hands after he pisses all over them and just keeps handling the food. True story. This was NOT made up. Eric Keen

Great Que and sides. Simple shop with picnic tables inside for seating and your choice of sauce, depending on you barbecue convictions. The sides are particularly good and some folks just get the plate with 3 sides. Plenty of food so come hungry.
